ELEVATE DISCOURSE: (UNLIKELY) ALLIANCES
In his speech to the UN General Assembly in 1988, Ronald Reagan coined the phrase „unification by alien invasion”. He used this phrase to describe the idea, which has been elaborated many times since, that an invasion by extraterrestrial powers would be needed to unify humanity in view of its numerous cultural differences.
On a geopolitical level, the history of humanity is riddled with unexpected alliances and unforeseen cooperations. Likewise, in civil society, the formation of broad-based alliances was and is an important element in the emergence of social movements and subsequently in the formulation and safeguarding of their goals.
But how much common ground is needed for the common cause and which boundaries remain unbridgeable? What invisible or even unholy alliances exist? The discourse programme of the 2023 festival will explore these major questions.
